Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Breaking Records!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Breaking Records!

There’s an apocalypses and everyone dies!

Just kidding.

If you would like to hear about “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” with no spoilers, keep Reading! But be careful! Because there’s a mark that shows you the limit between keeping yourself from the knowledge of what’s to come, and what isn’t!

Last Saturday night, bookstores across the country opened their doors to host late-night parties for masses of Muggles, in honour of the latest Harry Potter release. An event like this has not happened since 2007, the release of the last book in the Harry Potter series. That was a time before eBooks or even amazon were very popular.

Now, even though the business has changed dramatically, people in both the UK and America crowded the doors of bookstores like Barnes & Noble, in anticipation of the latest release. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was the most pre-ordered book on both Amazon and B&N, but is also expecting double-digit growth in its trade-publishing division over the next year.

The bookstores returned to their own ways of celebrating the new release by dusting off their sorting hats and quidditch brooms last weekend, had costume competitions, and even had trivia battles and games. A tradition that the original group of kiddie Potter fans had grown up with.

Barnes & Noble, specifically, prepared for the idea that the Harry Potter fan base would now be a multi-generational group and catered to their audience by creating a Muggle Wall. The Muggle Wall allowed long-time readers to write their favourite memories from the series up for all to see.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is written differently from the series, because it is written as a play, which debuted onstage last weekend at London’s Palace Theatre. This script was written by Jack Thorne and is based on an original story that he developed with J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany. This book also differs from the series because it takes place many years down the line, with the original characters sending their own children off to magic school. However, Ellie Berger, president of trade publishing at Scholastic (who publishes the series), states that “it’s the characters we know, who we love…whatever the format, there’s new content, there’s new adventure.”

If you want to read the book and still be surprised then it might be time for you to stop, because the spoilers start… NOW!

In the eighth story of the series, Harry goes on a big journey that continues over the two parts. However, this is the last of Harry Potter’s adventures. He is done now.

This book is intended for our generation. The generation who grew up going on adventures with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, so we all believe that what happens in this book matters. Thus, we have our play script. The script of what happened after Deathly Hallows, the script that answers all of our unanswered questions. Plus, the script that will give us another Harry Potter movie, and a play, and a play script to keep!

However, what we forgot to think about is the way plays are written. They’re written like this:

“Harry wakes suddenly. Breathing deeply in the night.

He waited a moment. Calming himself. And then he feels intense pain in his forehead. In his scar. Around him, Dark Magic moves.

GINNY: Harry . . .

HARRY: It’s fine. Go back to sleep.

GINNY: Lumos. . . A nightmare?

HARRY: Yes.”

While this type of dialogue is perfect on stage, it can be slightly disappointing to read it in a script because we are left without all the description we have all grown to know and love. Thus, you are forced to use your imagination slightly more than when you read a book.

However, don’t be discouraged by the fact that this is a play, because the gist of everything you want to know is revealed in the first pages. Harry is Head of Magical Law Enforcement for the Ministry of Magic, Ron is running his brothers’ bookshop, and Hermione is the Minister of Magic. However, from there the new story begins with Harry’s son, Albus, who is not only sorted into Slytherin, but is also miserable being the child of the famous Harry Potter. And, his best friend? Scorpius Malfoy, yep, you guessed it! The son of Draco Malfoy.

Albus and Scorpius get into very “Potter-like” trouble as the infinite question hangs over the story: Is Voldemort really gone for good?
